Unknown status bar icon

I have an icon on one of my iPads in the status bar that looks kind of like a white ringing handset in a black lozenge (it has two brackets on each side that flash on and off.) The icon does not appear in Apple's list of status bar icons. It does not appear on my other ipad, and my iPhone is not ringing or anything.
