iCloud Photos Library update paused - how to resume?

I just changed my settings to save photos in iCloud and "optimize mac storage" in Photos/Preferences. When I open Photos, it says "Upload Paused, Not Enough Local Storage." There is no selection to "resume." Local storage shouldn't be the issue, as it should now automatically upload to iCloud (for which I already upgraded my iCloud storage, so there's plenty) and reduce file sizes on my Mac. How do I get this to resume? I desperately need the space on my Mac.

Hello cindafromapo,

Thanks for the info. Based on the error message you received, you may need to free up some additional space on the hard drive of your Mac so that the iCloud Photos updates can take place. You can move large files to an external drive and delete them from your Mac. Make sure you have a Time Machine backup on a dedicated external drive before making these changes.

Once the iCloud Photos process finishes and the photos are optimized, then you can decide what to do with the available space remaining on your Mac.

The resources below will help you with this:

Back up your Mac with Time Machine

Use external storage devices with Mac - macOS User Guide

Free up storage space on your Mac

When this is done and you restart your Mac, the iCloud Photos upload process should resume: Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac.

Take care
