Help Tracks not selected from iOS 15 Apple music playlists in bmw i-drive

hello everyone

i have an iPhone XS and use Apple Music.

I connect iPhone to my Bmw via usb to listen Apple Music.

My car is 2015 Bmw 3.20i and media unit(NBT) is I-drive 4.0. Normally i have never had a problem with my car when using Apple Music normally.

I updated my phone to iOS 15 last week. while listening to apple music in my car, I could choose the song I wanted from the playlists, I was doing this from the i-drive unit. but now i can't.

While a song is playing, I go to the lists to choose another song, I click on the song, but the new song does not play. the song playing continues and does not switch to the new song. I changed the usb lightning cable but still the same. I connected it with bluetooth, when I click on the song from the lists, it does not open. it only goes to the next track when i press to go to the next track in the media unit. so I can't play tracks from my playlists on apple music in any way.

I updated the media unit of my car, there was no such problem before, I was listening to apple music in my car with a usb cable for a long time.I was doing all this with the i-drive controls or i-drive wheel

note:note: no confusion, my car does not have apple car play

this problem started with iOS 15. Can apple please fix this problem? I'm sure many BMW users like me have this problem.

I took a video of this problem but I don't know how to add the video here can the forum admins help me to upload the videos?

Meanwhile i've just found a way to fix it, altough not available for everyone:

You cannot change tracks played in Apple Music from the steering wheel buttons if the tracks are being streamed. if you download the tracks, you may be able to move around the playlists and select what you want directly from the knob or steering wheel.

But, in my case, i have a 126gb iphone... so i'm able to dowload the 1000 songs i have in my playlist in Apple Music

It’s weird - this issue has been off and on for me. It used to work fine for me but then iOS 15.0.2 (or earlier) broke it. But then iOS 15.1 fixed it for a while until about a week or so ago when the steering controls stopped working again (I could scroll through the playlist but couldn’t select a track using the steering control). I updated to iOS 15.2 last night and the steering controls are working fine now.

I would suggest updating to iOS 15.2, then removing and re-pairing your phone to the car. Hope that helps.

It’s a Christmas miracle! Okay, maybe just a bug fix, but still. I updated to 15.2 and magically my iTunes and Bimmer are in sync again! I didn’t have to re pair my phone or anything. I can skip, select new songs from other playlists - everything. I was also able to keep the BMW Connected drive app on my phone, which was causing the issue before IOS 15.1 disrupted the functionality.

One more note: Just talked to an Apple support engineer, currently chances are quite low that this issue will be solved in the future. It seems that there are underlying software changes in terms of the communication protocol (USB & Bluetooth related to music / Apple Music under the hood), which got introduced in iOS 15. Might be just the case that Apple now drops support for older systems which rely on their old-styled behaviour protocols. Means, any phone which uses iOS 15+ will not work anymore unfortunately.

Ok guys, I've having this issue since iOS 15, including 15.1, 15.2, and it just happened to me on 15.3 again.

Let me tell you how I fixed it every time ---- RESTART YOUR IPHONE.😂 Yes that's right, restart your iphone.

Every time my scrolling wheel lost function in music selection or I stuck with a playlist that can't play, I restart iphone and it just fixed itself.

I have same issue after updating from iOS 14.8 to iOS 15.3.1. Control keys do not work, sound quality seems to be also affected. I am using USB cable connection because the sound quality compering to Bluetooth is much better. I have to start manually Apple music from iPhone and select song from there and the Headunit does not show song art cover, cant select song to start from the Headunit etc.

Apple please take some responsibility that after updates such as like connecting iPhone with a car like BMW things work. I have read that from the beginning from iOS 15 there is no solution for that. Please provide then at least downgrade option if such a issues are. I only use Apple music in my car and if it will now not work anymore then...

Well it was good while it lasted... I had a little over a month of a fully functioning phone + car relationship, but alas my phone automatically updated to 15.2.1 and now I'm back to same old bluetooth issue.

My iPhone automatically connects to my Bimmer (2017 430), but won't play. I have to hit play on my actual phone and the music starts. I can skip songs with the forward and back arrows on the dashboard controls, but when I select a song with the BMW navigation dial/ steering wheel the song is checked, and it seems like the phone wants to work, but then nothing happens.

I'm going to try removing the BMW Connected drive app again and see if that works.

I really wish Apple would get their stuff together with the bluetooth and these updates...

Also tried a full restore through manual IPSW today. No luck. Still not working on iPhone X unfortunately. As the iDrive did not receive any update (F32 4 Series Coupe 2014) it must be an iOS 15 or iOS 15.1 issue. Really thinking about downgrading to iOS 14 or switching back to Spotify instead. Spotify is working through BMW APPS and USB connection. Apple Music instead is not even showing Playlists through USB lol.
