Turn off grouping for file searches within apps

When I am trying to open a file via an application, my Mac started grouping the file search window by Today/Previous 7 Days/Previous 30 days then by month (screenshot below). It's incredibly annoying and makes it hard for me to find what I'm looking for. It doesn't do this when I search on the finder level, only when I use the "Open" function within an application. I've found the answer on how to fix it on the finder level, but not on the open tool within an application. Any ideas on how to turn grouping off for the open function with applications?

Hi erockthehowse,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. We understand you'd like sort how the files are grouped when opening a document from an application, and we'd like to assist. In most applications you'll see a group button at the top left of the window. Which application are you using? If you save a file to your Desktop and then try opening the document does the grouping button appear? This article has some helpful information as well:

Do you have any available updates for the application or for macOS?

We look forward to learning more about your issue.

Take care.
