ios15 and American Airlines entertainment

I recently flew with American Airlines, and could not use their in flight entertainment. I could log in access the site, even watch the ads and trailers, but whenever I tried to watch a movie or TV show, I would just get a black screen. I am a frequent flyer and know how to use the in flight wifi and entertainment, but this time tried on my iPad Pro, my iPhone 12 and my wife’s iPhone 11, but it would not work on any of them. Only difference between the recent flights and previous ones was that we upgraded all the devices to ios15. Is there a new setting that I have to change, or is it just not compatible?

Setting Privacy Tracking Allow Apps to Track…turn it on

if I turn it on movie plays. If I turn it off it does not. A bit slow to start but it does play.

I have not touched the AA app, straight to aa.entertainment.Viasat.com after hooking up to aa-inflight Wi-Fi.

It is NOT the AA app. The videos are streamed through the web browser. The app just redirects you to the appropriate page. On Monday I was unable to watch movies. As others have said, commercials and trailers play fine but feature will not stream. Each time I’ve had this issue it was on a flight serviced by viasat. I just got off a flight from Denver to phoenix and it was an older plane still serviced by the GoGo network. Movie streamed just fine. Next leg is Phoenix back to Denver. Hopefully it is another Viasat flight, if so it will confirm this to be a problem with the Viasat stream on AA’s entertainment system. If I do experience issues I’ll try playing with security settings, cookies, anti-track, etc. Viasat is probably trying to collect data and track users and that is probably ******* off iOS15 privacy features which then blocks the stream.

I and others on my flight today had the same issue who had ios15. I updated to ios 15 yesterday. My wife did not and her’s worked fine. Our flight attendant was trying to help and we found that those with ios15 would only see adds and trailers but movies would not load. I also tried safari and edge browsers and made no difference. Our flight attendant was going to report the issue to American, but this sounds like an ios15 problem

Whom to Ask:

Haven't used that app, but did you ask the stewardess for assistance? I would look up the App in the App Store, and ask the Developer how to solve this. You'll find their Contact Us information in the app's site of the App Store.

"The app isn’t the problem, although you can although you can use the app to access entertainment functions, the app pushes you to your browser...and it is the media player on the web that will only play the trailers and advertisements but won’t play the movie (I think)?

Flight Attendants’ Ordeal:

I don’t think I’ve been up high in the sky for more than a quarter of a century (or thereabouts). So, put this in the attendant’s training manuals, and all might be solved on their end.

Report this to Apple:

Do your part: Let Apple know what is going on here. Provide them with feedback on this. They may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they received on this, the more they will know what is going on, and what needs to be fixed in updates to come.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Comment: on when you came across this issue, and how you have troubleshot it this far.
  3. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  4. Proceed from there aw necessary

I don’t see how that would be different with ios14 vs ios15. Apple isn’t paying anyone to let us watch a movie on the airplane.

viastat must be implementing something tricky between cookies, ip address tracking, scripting, etc that the tracking protection of iOS 15 broke.

im not sure using chrome or Firefox changes anything on iOS. They all use WebKit?

I tried safari, chrome, Firefox and edge. All had same issue. The only thing i didn’t try is my dell computer which would likely not have any issue since it isn’t running IOS 15. Don’t know is developer is slow on fixing the bug or some financial reason but it’s annoying and has been a problem for months for me. I am not sure when IOS 15 was released or if it started then. I have been having nothing but issues with my iPhone 13 so there is a lesson there for me too. Wait some for apps to catch up.
