Problem saving to the desktop

I have a Mac Mini late 2012 running High Sierra v. 10.13.6.

Usually when I saved a file to the desktop it would appear there immediately, but currently the file doesn't show up on the desktop screen anymore and I have to do a 'spotlight search' to find it. That's why I don't save to the desktop anymore, but to some folder that is already on the desktop.

How do I solve this problem?

Mac mini, macOS 10.13

As a note, you're best off not saving files to the desktop, too many files on theDesktop will slow your mac, in fact you can get so many on the Desktop that the Mac cannot function.

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
