Upgrading old macbook to Elcapitan

Why won't the El Capitan .dmg actually upgrade my macbook. All it does is to update any files in the current MAC OS namely 10.6.8?

A frustrated mac User.

Makes no sense without more insight... Is your Mac compatible

OS X 10.11 El Capitan - Technical Specifications:

https://support.apple.com/kb/SP728

MacBook (Early 2015) (Only 10.10 and 10.11)

MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)

MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)

MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)

Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)

iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)

Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)

Xserve (Early 2009)

The older macOS installer backups on this server:

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT211683

verify you are using the Safari browser to download/initiate the macOS links.

If necessary boot into Safeboot to run the installer after it downloads.
