Is Touch ID supposed to work when powering on MacBook?

I recently bought an M1 MacBook Pro and I love it, but I do not understand why Touch ID doesn't work to unlock the computer after powering the computer on. It works in all other situations but I have to enter my password when I first power the computer on. If Touch ID works when waking the computer, making purchases online, auto-filling passwords, etc., why not when I power the computer on?

This is normal.

There are a few instances where Touch ID will not be accepted by macOS:

  • If you restarted your Mac, or if you're not logged into your user account.
  • If you have not unlocked your Mac for 48 hours.
  • If you are trying to unlock Security & Privacy
  • If you are  trying to unlock Users & Groups Preferences (when FileVault is on)
  • If 5 wrong fingerprints attempts
