Facetime on my iPad (3rd Generation)

I have an iPad 3rd generation, got it in 2012. I can only use it for Facetime and sharing photos. Now Facetime doesn't work, says it has an issue connecting with the Facetime server. Any suggestions?? I cannot even update the version I am on. It says its current on iOS 9.3.5
