HomePod mini racket

Every now and then, one of the pair makes a horrible loud grinding sound like a metal bumper being dragged, while the paired mini continues to play music. I know how to make it stop, (hey Siri, stop) (and other choice words), but I don't know why it does it. Has anybody else experienced this? If it's a malfunction or defect, I need to return it!
