IPhone 12 with mmWave isn’t working abroad - can I switch it under Apple Care?

I purchased an iPhone 12 Pro less than a year ago in the US and then brought it to where I live abroad, unaware that the phone had the 5G mmWave antenna, which is incompatible in my country. I have Apple Care and need to know if I can trade the phone in for the model without the mmWave antenna. If so, do I need to take the phone into a store or can I send it to Apple from my home country. Thank you!

NO, they won't. If they gave a replacement phone it too would have mmWave on the phone. And there is no defect in your phone, so Apple wouldn't replace it to begin with. Apple builds and sells phone for the country they are being sold for and used in. They will NOT give you a phone in the US for the country you live. They won't even have one in the US for your country at all.

If you're not happy with the US purchased phone, sell it to someone. Then use the money to buy one in your country. Apple isn't going to trade you in any way shape or form.

This is very illustrative of why it's important to purchase your phone in your country if you want a phone which is the most compatible with your country.
