Right. So I’m stuck with TextEdit. If I can’t delete it off the MacBook Pro, how do I disable it or at least not have to deal with it? Everything is opening in TextEdit and I’m unable to use my Word/Excel, etc.
Any constructive advice?

Select a .txt file by highlighting it and Command i will open the Get Information pane.

Select your App of choice, select change all

TextEdit is built in as if it is part of the operating system so it can't be deleted.

Select a Word file, do Get Info, find the part that says Open With and select MS-Word. Check the box that says open all files like this with MS-Word. If it is grayed out, unlock the window by clicking on the padlock (if there is one) and reselect MS-Word again to get the option to open all such files with Word. Do the same with Excel and Powerpoint if you need to.

Ok thanks I tried that but it will not allow me to choose an App - that is, the ‘Open with’ section is not highlighted and I cannot get in to it. I think I’ve got a serious bug of some sort. Seems all very hopeless but thank you for the advice/instructions. I’m going to have to start using the work laptop - Lenova - which I hate but at least TextEdit is not on it.

Yes, that means the versions of MS-Word, MS-Excel etc. you have are too old to run under your version of the MacOS. You will need to update them, depending on what you have that might be free or it might cost something. That's why TextEdit was starting up, there was no other App to open those files.

If you have Pages on your Mac, the word processor Apple provides, it can open Word files and save files in Word format, with some limitations. Also, same goes for Numbers and Excel, Numbers can open Excel files and save in Excel format (without 100% of all the options the native Excel has).

Or if you want the actual MS-Office apps to work, you will need to upgrade what you have.

There is also LibreOffice which is free. It can open and save MS-Office files.
