reinstalling macOS High Sierra error

just got off the phone with Apple Care. i was trying to reinstall macOS but i got an error "could not create preboot volume for APFS install."

MacBook Air 11″, macOS 10.13

With older Macs you need to reformat the drive to MacOS Extended Journaled & let the Installer change it to APFS if it needs to.
