Does Apple Watch use data from speed sensor for the Outdoor Cycle activity? The watchOS 10 update made it possible to connect speed sensors to the Apple Watch, but when recording an “outdoor cycle” activity it does not seem to be utilizing the data from the speed sensor to calculate speed and distance. Can someone please confirm or deny this is the case? I bought a Garmin Speed Sensor 2 because my mountain bike rides are always shorted on mileage since the GPS isn’t accurate enough to pick up all the turns on the trails I ride (often under a canopy of trees since the trails are in a forest). It appears the speed sensor data is not used though, because my mileage is still the same as before pairing the speed sensor. I did confirm the sensor is working for the “indoor cycle” activity, but that the reason I bought it in the first place was to make the “outdoor cycle” activity more accurate. Very disappointed, as I was initially super excited that my Apple Watch would finally be able to accurately record my mountain bike rides!

Apple watch doesn’t auto-detect outdoor walk Adding to the previous content that Apple Watch doesn’t pick up when I’m walking outdoors. At this point Apple has improved upon auto sync with watch and iphone maps interface enough that I was using the maps feature yet Apple Watch only picked up on my outdoor activity when I arrived home. I understand the auto detect is a secondary option to manual start but it’s clearly too late when Ive arrived at my destination. Anyone else have this issue?

After doing a bit of research,I found this;

Auto-start for cycling only works with Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Series 6,

and Apple Watch Series 7.

(Auto pause/resume works on Apple Series 3 and later.)
