External Monitor Issues on M1 MacBook Air

Hey everyone,

Since I got my M1 MacBook Air in July I have been experiencing some issues with external monitors. When it is connected to my second display it semi-frequently goes completely black for several seconds then comes back on. This usually happens a couple times in a row then works perfectly fine for a while.

The other issue I have encountered often takes place when I have been using the other input on my monitor and change input back to the MacBook. As seen in the image below, the screen becomes covered in white noise and the only fix seems to be unplugging the display then plugging it back in. This also happens sometimes when I am using the Mac on the external screen.

So far, I haven’t done much to troubleshoot other than restarting the Mac several times and using different HDMI cables and USB-C hubs. I have also reinstalled the macOS 11.6 update and that hasn’t made a difference.

Does anyone know of anything I can do to fix this issue? Also, is this perhaps a software bug that Apple may fix in a future software update?

Thanks!

Hello, thanks for your reply!

I believe the monitor I have is a 27” Samsung curved CJG5 display. Can’t connect to the screen directly because it uses HDMI, and the Mac is Thunderbolt, and I don’t have a cable that would work without an adapter. It does have Display port as well but don’t currently have a cable for that either. I’m using an Anker PowerExpand 11-in1 USB-C hub and the other one I tried is some cheapo $40 adapter. Both seem to be experiencing pretty much the same problem.
