Thunderbolt 3 external hard drive compatibility with 2015 MacBook pro

My late 2015 macbook pro running Big Sur 11.6 is not recognizing an external thunderbolt 3 hard drive. I'm using a thunderbolt 3 to usb A adapter cable, but I've tested the original thunderbolt 3 cable without an adapter on other mac computers. It works on some, but not others.

Hello szl48,

We see you're having issues with connecting your external drive to your Mac, and we'd like to help out.

We noted that you were able to work on isolating away from the adapter, which is always good try.

Do you happen to have any other external hard drives to connect to the Macs? That can help to isolate it down further.

It may also help to try checking with the manufacturer of the drive, to see if there are any known compatibility issues.

Lastly, which format is the drive in, and which macOS version was running on the Macs where it worked well? There's some good info on formats available in Disk Utility here: File system formats available in Disk Utility on Mac

Cheers.
