Hi dougdez. Curious. This seems like a bug. The Add to Home Screen action is creating a separate web app, similar to a fullscreen MDM Web Clip, rather than a bookmark link that opens in Safari. This seems to happen only with the mobile version (m.gameknot.com). If you create a bookmark to add to the Home Screen from the full version of the website, the link opens in Safari with all Safari’s controls. This also seem to be specific to GameKnot’s mobile site. In brief testing I don't see this behaviour with other mobile websites. This also isn't device specific as I see the same behaviour on iPad. You might consider sending feedback to apple.

So, what options do you have…

  • Keep using as is. You can navigate the website by using the splash page menu or by clicking the "Site map" link at the bottom of the webpage. You can still move forward and backward from visited pages within the website by swiping from the left or right edge of the screen. Zoom in and out with a two-finger gesture still works.

  • Create a bookmark to add to the Home Screen from the full version, then switch to the mobile version from the link at the bottom right of the page.

  • Create your own Home Screen bookmark of the mobile site, that opens in Safari, by creating a shortcut in the Shortcuts app.
