Macbook Pro A1708(no touch bar) SSD upgraded

Hello 👋,

I have a Macbook Pro A1708 and wanted to upgrade my ssd. I found that they have an adapter so you can use any M.2 NVMe. I bought the samsung pm991 but keep running into an issue where I’m able to download macOS big sur or high sierra but when it restarts to install it turns off halfway then turns on again but it gets just stuck in a boot loop and keeps doing the same thing with both macOS versions. I thought it was the adapter but I got a replacement and it didn’t work either. The ssd is formatted to Mac OS Extended with the scheme set to GUID partition and also tried to format it to APFS for macOS BigSur and still same thing. Any suggestions?

It could be an issue either with the SSD or the adapter, but there is no way to know without swapping them out. It is also possible that neither one of them are compatible with the laptop. You are using a completely unsupported configuration where Apple won't help you and Samsung (or any SSD manufacturer) will assist you because you are using their SSD with an unsupported adapter on unsupported hardware. At best you may have limited support from the manufacturer of the SSD adapter.

There is always risk of compatibility issues with any SSD even when used with a standard PC so it is not surprising that a Mac which uses its own proprietary SSD connector has issues with a standard M.2 SSD which Apple never meant to be supported in the first place since Apple may even have tweaked the chipsets to work better with the Apple branded SSD which may have introduced more chances of compatibility issues with third party SSDs.
