Some. Others, not so much.
Dell has lots of monitors, and lots of connections—just as HP has bazillions of often similarly-named but potentially very different printers—and some will work and are compatible, and some will not.
As wirl all of these questions, always start with the technical specifications. Here are the Apple specifications:
MacBook Air (M1, 2020) - Technical Specifications
You need to know the maximum resolution, and the available interconnects.
From the tech specs:
Video Support
Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display at millions of colors and:
Thunderbolt 3 digital video output
That tells you you can use VGA (yuck, nope), HDMI (okay, tends to have some graphics overhead). DVI (older, but workable), or Thunderbolt 2 connection (probably the best choice, but will be more expensive). Thunderbolt 2 here can drive up to a 6K resolution display.
You’ll need to get from USB-C connector to one of the previous connections, which means buying an adapter (dongle) or a dock. There are various adapters and docks available. Here are some docks:

Now go look for the Dell monitor specs, and see if and how well those match these options.
It’s usually also fairly difficult to cause permanent physical damage here, short of jamming the wrong connector into the wrong socket.
