It depends on which MacBook Pro model you are using.

Sierra is required mid 2010 MacBook Pro or later.

High Sierra is required mid 2010 MacBook Pro or later.

Mojave is required Mid 2012 or newer.

Catalina is required Mid 2012 MacBook Pro or newer.
