iMac and Wireless Printing?

Hi folks, just wondering if anyone here can help...

I have a late 2012 iMac which I have updated to High Sierra 10.13.6... I've just bought a new wireless printer from HP and once connected with USB it prints fine, didn't need to download anything... seems to have recognised it automatically, however I have no idea how to get the wireless printing to work?

Does anyone have any simple step by step instructions on how I can do this? I connected through WiFi but nothing happens and it says "printer not responding"... if it uses WiFi does that mean I have to switch off my Internet WiFi connection on the iMac to use the printer? Or do I need to connect the printer through WiFi to the router or something?

Any help on how to set it up would be great, HP's instructions are not the best.

Hi,

Any information about the exact HP printer model?

Generally speaking, do not use a direct Wi-Fi connection from a computer to the printer.

Instead, make sure that the printer and the computer both are connected to the same Wi-Fi network (router). If your router supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), that may be an easy way of connecting the printer.

Once the Wi-Fi connection as such is OK, it is time to add the printer. If necessary, you may want to begin by resetting the printing system. Details depend on the printer (for example, whether it is an AirPrint-enabled model).

The router's local network (LAN/WLAN) handles the printing. Your Internet connection (WAN) would not be affected.
