Intermittent Apple Pencil Function - is it an iPad issue?

I have two iPad Pro’s a 2016 (A1584) and a 2018 (A1673). Each can be exclusively paired to a single Apple Pencil 1. The pencil works flawlessly with the 2018 model but only intermittently with the 2016. When it chooses not to work with the 2016, no amount of charging, forgetting or re-pairing will bring it back to function. Recovery seems to be random and spontaneous over hours to days.

This would lead me to suspect some part of the 2016 iPad is faulty. Any thoughts on whether this is a software or hardware issue? Can’t find anything similar online.

Both of those iPad Pro models are 2016 models.

One is a 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro model and the other is the 9.7 inch screen iPad Pro model.

Both from 2016.

NO 2018 iPad Pro uses the 1st gen Pencil

Sorry.

Make sure the tip of the Pencil is screwed on securely and snugly ( NOT TOO tight! ).

Also, have you checked the tip of your Pencil lately?

Does it look worn?

Can you see the end of the inner metal tube/transducer from the tip of the Pencil?

Apple has a 4 pack of replacement tips for purchase.

Found here.
