Pencil paired with iPad, all charged but doesn’t work

I pencil stopped working with my iPad Pro even when paired. It does work with my iPad Air. It is a first generation I pencil. I reset all settings with no change. Tried hard reset with no change. Tried “forget this device” with no result. The only irregular thing that happens is that the I pencil will pair with the iPad Pro without being inserted.
