homepod will not play music

I have had a homepod mini for a few weeks. At first it worked great, now it will not play Apple Music from either my MacBook (Pro 16-inch, 2019) or iPhone (12 Pro). It plays the first note and then silence thereafter. The progress bar in Apple Music continues as normal. If I skip a song the same thing happens. Restarting the homepod sometimes fixes the issue until I leave the device idle for a while, then I have to repeat. Homepod, phone and Mac are all on the latest os.

On the iPhone in particular the airplay will often fail, and when it does work will soon drop leaving me unable to control the homepod from the phone.
