I presume that you may be making comparison between USB-C and proprietary Lightning connectors (as found on many other models of iPad and iPhone). Lighting was designed by Apple to provide a physically robust connector - that when mated is retained within the socket.
A Lightning connector socket incorporates two retainer springs - one on each of the narrow edges of the socket. The mating Lightning plug has two corresponding divots into which the springs positively engage - latching the plug within the socket.
By comparison, USB-C connectors do not feature an equivalent spring-retainer to latch the USB-C plug within the socket.
To add-on to Lotus’ post …
… USB-C incorporates all the “moving” pieces into the “more easily replaced” component (i.e. the cable)
A sub-standard cable might well generate substandard retention force.
Are they Apple cables?
no they are various other brands - I will pick up an apple cord and try it tomorrow. I guess you get what you pay for
