Macbook pro color banding when watching videos

There's this weird thing happening when watching movies or videos, specifically dark scenes, there are blocks or heavily pixelation of colors. The second I interact with the screen (change volume/brightness or move mouse) the pixelation completely goes away and the creates a smooth sheen over once pixel-144p looking video.

If I continue messing with the volume, the video will play without any color banding issues whatsoever. What is happening and why?

I am thoroughly disappointed as I've read 100's of posts regarding this, and apple "experts" think that resetting the NVRAM is the solution to every problem.
