Limitations of AirTag

Hi Apple support team,

I spoke with 6 people from the Apple support team with so many call redirects & finally got an answer to all my queries. I do love the apple ecosystem a lot. However, as an end user I pretty much find Apple Tags not useful. I personally feel Apple that failed to strike a balance between third party privacy & end user privileges. Here are my reasons.

1) My first query was regarding a real life scenario where I attach an AirTag to my bike, leave it overnight at a metro station. In case if I want to find if everything is ok & my bike is at the designated spot where I left it, I can use Find My where my AppleTag will try to communicate with any random iphone that crosses it's path briefly for a few seconds. Then the airtag will provide it's location based on that. The third party iphone user to whom my airtag made a brief contact won't be notified that an unknown airtag made contact with them for a few seconds. Only if a stranger & an unidentified air tag move in the same path & direction for a certain period of time then the person will get a notification. Fair enough.

2) Scenario 2 is like above. Assume if I leave my AirTag at some metro station tagged to my bike & I know that I'm away from my AirTag, if it still makes an alert sound every 8 hrs, then it might cause unnecessary disturbance to people at the metro station. I don't want my AirTag to raise an alarm as I'm well aware that I'm far away from my air tag & know exactly where I left it. So an alarm in this situation is unnecessary.

3) Say if a burglar tries to steal my bike, & if the person is using an Apple device, he/she will get an alert that an unknown AirTag is following them, which in turn defeats the whole purpose of using an AirTag. The burglar can easily locate & discard my AirTag if they get an alert that an unknown AirTag is following them.

This time around I feel Apple has given more importance to third party privacy & reduced the end user privileges. I do hope you could address the above issues in your forthcoming releases & strike a balance.

Thanks,

-Saravana.
