mac Battery

My mac is a few years old, has worked perfectly till recently, when the battery gave out on me when it was not connected to the mains power. Never had it happen before. I rarely use it on battery only.

Now if I click on battery icon it says the battery's power is significantly reduced, and to check service options - which probably means taking it to a shop to get a new battery, not something I relish!

Have tried running battery right down, then reconnecting mains and it seems to be fully charged but still giving same message. Any ideas?
