My iPhone XR suddenly is not showing on the main screen a number when I have a new message. This is a recent issue. I have restarted it several times and I have also upgraded the operating system and it still is happening (Or rather not happening). Thoughts ?

Is the issue only happening with the Messages notifications or with other apps as well? If the issue is only with Messages, check out the steps in this article If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open.

Thanks - I think it was Mercury retrograde cause the whole phone refused to power down but I did what you said (before you said it) and it appears to work now- many thanks!
