Apple Mail - Inbox Messages overlapping

I have an issue on an iPad where two email messages are appearing to render over each other in the inbox as per the image below. Not seen this before so wondering if anyone else has or any advice? It only relates to some emails as in this screen shot. Thanks.

First, ensure that you have updated to the most recent version of iPadOS - currently iPadOS 14.8 or iPadOS 15.0.2.

If the iPad is already running one of these two versions, force close the Mail App - and then force-restart your iPad.

To force close an App, swipe-upwards from the bottom edge of the screen to the centre - and pause briefly before lifting your finger from the screen; the Task Switcher will open, showing thumbnail images for each App. Swipe the Mail App off the top of the screen.

Next, force-restart the iPad:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On other iPad models: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

I was helping a friend who had this problem with a latest model M1 iPad. We tried various fixes found on the internet such as going to default dynamic type sizes, installing the latest updates, force quitting Mail and rebooting. Some helped briefly but none persisted with the double text returning.

The one fix that so far seems to have worked is a hard reset. This is accomplished on the iPad Pro with FaceId by pressing and releasing the volume up button, then the volume down button then pressing and holding the single button until the iPad screen goes black then keep holding until the Apple logo appears. These steps are done in sequence.

I spoke to Apple support about this. As expected, they cannot bring the issue to their engineers unless we've tried a wipe of the device.

So, I not just wiped, but plugged it into my Mac and did a restore. This is supposed to wipe and reload the OS. I then restored data and gave it back to my user. Sure enough, it happened again. Time to get back on the phone to report this to Apple and hope that they do something about it.

Not sure what device this is happening on for everyone else, but it is a 4th gen iPad Pro in my case.

This has been a recurring problem on my iPad for several months. If I reboot, the inbox returns to its clean state, but shortly after the duplicate inbox problem reoccurs. I’ve also tried cleaning our my junk and trash mailboxes, but this is not a fix. Re-installing app in its simple state does nothing either. I feel that Apple should fix this since many are complaining about it and having to constantly reboot is not the user-friendly sophisticated system I expect from Apple.

I'm having this issue as well. Email is an o365 account. It seems to have started after upgrading to iPadOS 15.

I have tried everything suggested here (force reset, latest version, display/font settings, kill Mail app, and reboot) but the issue always comes back. I also set all mail folders to "push" so that when I access those folders, the emails are already there and not all coming in at once, possibly causing this rendering issue. That also didn't do anything and the issue persists.

I haven't tried removing the account and resyncing, or wiping the iPad.
