Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before proceeding. In particular, 32-bit oftware won't run in Catalina and newer; if you need it, upgrade to Sierra, High Sierra, or Mojave instead.

I ended up installing Sierra OS, which I hadn't done because my bookkeeping program would not have worked on it. The upgrade (although I'm still a long way from Big Sur) fixed the Let's Encrypt SSL glitch that showed up at the same time as the problems with the Chrome update. I figure they were connected. Anyway, all is fixed. Thank you everyone!

2. Yes.

The info page says my Mac is compatible (iMac, Retina 5K/27"/Late 2014).
So basically, I just download and install?
And I have the required 35G memory available.
Will those OS still fix the SSL problem? (thanks a ton, Niel!)
