I have downgraded macOS Catalina to macOS Mojave. Having trouble with System Preferences crashing when checking for software update. I used a macOS Mojave 10.14.6 installer USB 3.0 drive. After successful installation, I attempted to update the macOS Mojave security (and Safari) updates. The update failed and upon a user-induced reboot, System Preferences app crashes. I am open to suggestions. Thank you in advance for your assistance. I will be happy to provide additional documentation!

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

Reinstall Mojave if needed.

Thank you for the info. I will delete it as soon as I get it backed up. A question: When I originally did this, I added another boot APFS Bootable Volume to the existing Catalina "Macintosh HD" and "Macintosh HD - Data". One of the 32-bit apps that I loaded was assuming that the proper bootable APFS Volume was the Catalina "Macintosh HD". It used that Volume thus corrupting it. This was definitely an issue in the 32-bit app. I was not told what to name the alternate bootable APFS Volume and so I named it "macOS Mojave HD". I eventually figured this out but only after sometime researching several documentation sources, including the App vendor as well as APPLE docs. I call it an "undocumented system feature"....lol. Oh well....live and learn.

Hi BDAqua,

Thank you for replying to my query. I do have more information.

Yes....I have tried that. To restate, I am downgrading an older iMac from Catalina to Mojave. In doing so, I erase the APFS Volume "Macintosh HD" but not APFS Volume "Macintosh HD - Data". When I realized that the delay in execution of most features, especially in Finder (selecting different existing folders), I decided to unmount the APFS Volume "Macintosh HD - Data". Doing this appeared to remove the delay. I am not an expert but my guess is that the daemon FSEVENTSd (file system events daemon) is examining the second volume. Check out the following URL ... https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1502226 . Now that the 2nd APFS Volume is unmounted, the delay no longer exists, and I am seeing what I consider normal function. I will keep this post updated as I continue....Stay tuned. Thank you again for you reply.....Rudy
