So I've just created a new desktop and every time I try to open a new tab on Safari it switches back to the open tab in the other desktop. I've already disabled the settings in System Preferences> Mission Control. What else can I do to prevent this as I want to separate my work

Create a new WINDOW (not Tab) in the Space that you want to use.
If the window gets created in the wrong Space, drag it to the desired one.

Enable the button that says "When switching to an application, switch to a Space with open windows for that application". So this way, if you already have Safari open on screen one but click a link in screen two, it will jump you over to screen one where Safari is open. Then just ensure that apps are open in the Space that you want them in. Let us know how that works.

We understand that new Safari tabs are not opening on your preferred space on your Mac. When you say you updated the setting, was it as is outlined on the article: Work in multiple spaces on Mac under "Assign apps to spaces"?

yes I think so. I've disabled the first 3 as that's what the last thread advised. I've attached a screenshot
