iCloud Drive vs. Google Drive file stream
Hi,
Google recently evolved its 'Backup and Sync' software to 'Google Drive' on macOS, which allows users to access their cloud-stored files by either:
- streaming (files stay in the cloud, with no usage of hard drive storage except for those marked as "Available Offline", accessible by a local virtual drive), or
- mirroring (all files are synced with the cloud, with a full local copy of all files, accessible by a local folder.)
The File Streaming approach is quite interesting, because the user can Quick Look or Open the cloud-stored files without having to download them in advance. The download happens on-the-fly: as the files are opened, they're instantly downloaded. Which is very convenient, considering broadband internet connection is widely available (with speeds reaching 10 Gbps.) This applies to macOS or iOS (through Google Drive app).
In contrast, iCloud Drive enables the user to have his files in the cloud, but whenever he wants to access them, the files must first be downloaded and then opened (either on macOS or iOS).
So, I was wondering whether iCloud Drive might soon also be revamped somehow to allow users to fully view their cloud-stored files without having to download them in advance, just like the new Google Drive. This would save both time and local storage space.
Any thoughts or ideas?
Cheers.
