Can you retrieve lost pdfs on I books mine seem to have disappeared

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Wondering
- if you have tried searching for .pdf files on your iPad
- if the pdf files are available from an iPad back-up
- if you use iCloud, and can open the .pdf's there
Seems .pdf files added to "Books" may not appear in the "Books" library unless you "drag" them there.
Is there another folder / collection in the Books app, where they may be ?

Could the .pdf's need to be "unhidden":
