If you never made ANY device/data backups prior, it is too late now.
These devices are computers and need to be treated like a full computer by making/creating regular/semi-regular device backups to Apple iCloud, and/or some other online, offsite data storage/backup service and/or to a full computer, like a Mac or Windows PC, which should, also, be getting regular data backups, as well.
