It has not even been an year but the paint from the alert slider has fallen off despite minimal usage and that too with care.

Unfortunate, but I can assure you Apple will not address this kind of cosmetic wear under warranty. They never do, particularly after nearly a year.
Do you use the Magsafe leather case? It is very good.
I use a silicone case, and have put a lamination on the whole body of the phone except the volume buttons and the alert slider, and unfortunately the paint chipped off from there.
It's why I always go for black phones, anodizing is harder.
