the Activation Lock

it asks me for the Apple ID and pw that was used to set up this A1778 iphone

I have my own Apple ID for another, older iphone

but I dont know who set up the A1778 and I don’t have a proof of purchase documentation, just that it was given to me

Which lock exactly?

SIM locked => Ask the carrier that locked iPhone to unlock and if you qualify

Passcode locked => If you forgot the passcode on your iPhone, or your iPhone is disabled - Apple Support

Screen Time locked => If you forgot your Screen Time passcode - Apple Support

Activation locked => How to remove Activation Lock - Apple Support

Activation Lock is a theft deterrent feature with no bypass or workaround.

Without the owner's authorisation (Apple ID & password), no thief or anyone including you can re-use the device.

You can recycle the device responsibly.
