16:9 picture format not able to Save to File as DNG

Iphone 13 Pro max

Steps to replicate the issue:

  1. Shot a picture in 4:3 format
  2. Go to Camera Roll > Export the Raw pic > Select Save to File > without the need to share location and All photo data.
  3. Select any folder and Save
  4. Go to Folder > Raw pic is saved with original big file size

Issue is replicated if picture being shot in 16:9 format, despite All photo data and Locations are turned on > Save to Files > Only JPG is saved instead of Raw. File size about 1.6MB

I have the exact same problem on my new iPhone 13 Pro Max (iOS 15.0.2).

I set it up as new when I got it so it cannot be caused by restore. If it is of any relevance here are my Photos and Camera settings:

  • Settings -> Photos -> Transfer To Mac or PC is set to Keep Originals
  • Settings -> Camera -> Formats -> Camera Capture is set to Most Compatible
  • Settings -> Camera -> Apple ProRAW is set to Enabled

I have also tried setting Options -> All Photos Data to Enabled after selecting a picture to export / copy.

It doesn't matter whether I try to copy it to Files (on the phone) or to FE File Explorer Pro remote destination (PC network share) -- I always end up with a JPEG instead of a DNG file.

This is true for any aspect ratio other than 4:3 -- both 1:1 (Square) and 16:9 result in a JPEG file every single time.

Hi albertfromkl,

To make sure we're on the same page, you're able to take a photo with your iPhone, export it in the ProRAW format and it exports properly.

However, if you take the same steps but in a 16:9 format, it doesn't export as ProRAW but rather a JPG, is that correct?

You can see details about exporting photos and working with ProRAW in the following resource:

Cheers!
