how do I free up space on my mac?

I am trying to free up space on my computer so i can install the latest OS. It seems there is a large file of migrated photos that I can't open. Should I delete it or will I lose photos? when you run out of space like this is it just time for a new computer?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.12

Reinstall Anew:

If you were to backup your Mac, your photos would be included in the backup. So, you could import them from the backup through use of the Migration Assistant. So, what I think is best is to backup your Mac, erase the hard drive, and then install the macOS anew. Once installed anew, import as desired.

I see macOS Sierra is Installed. So, perform the scenario, as if it were for macOS High Sierra. How to Reinstall the macOS Anew - No TMB Prior to Upgrade - Apple Support
