Who the heck is Benjamin Fleischer?

As you can see in the screenshot below, I received a warning from my System Preferences about an app from a particular developer, which is entirely unfamiliar to me. Can someone please help me understand where this comes from and why it's here?

Incidentally, this popped up immediately after changing my settings for my Zoho WordDrive app to enable outside developer apps. This is what I was instructed to do and did. Please advise!

Benjamin Fleischer is the developer of macFUSE and all kinds of other projects. In other words, it's not malware. Something you installed in the past must have needed macFUSE to run and was installed along with the app.

It's up to you whether or not you need it any longer. Allow it if you do, or uninstall macFUSE.

Suggest downloading from a Respected ASC Contributor the application Malwarebytes for Mac. It is free or paid for added features. Run the Application and it should remove the malware / adware. Once done, restart computer and test.

There are no known Windows-like Viruses in the wild that self replicate and affect macOS, because of the underling UNIX  Foundation and Permission Limitation.

There are Malware-viruses and Adware-viruses that does affect macOS and are often times downloaded as part of an Application from Third Party UnTrusted Site and get installed along with the Application.

Malwarebytes is enough and designed for that very purpose.

Thought, this computer is still badly compromised by the Application CleanMyMac.

It are useless, unneeded, cause havoc and interferes with the normal operation of the OS and may even Corrupt the OS requiring a Reinstallation.

Third Party Applications that remove, alter, modify or attempt to do so and CMM is one of these should be Removed as Per Developers Instructions

As per a quick search on Apple Support Community Forums - the first 600 posting all point to the damage this specific application does https://discussions.apple.com/search?q=cleanmymac

A quick web search reveals this is likely a byproduct of an attempt to install a component of FUSE file system extension. In most (?) cases the installation is legit, but it can be abused by a bad actor. If you weren't actively trying to install a new software at the time this appeared then something was going on in the background that was possibly legit, possibly not.

To your question of how it got on your computer - it's difficult to say. A small lapse in judgement like clicking links in email can allow something like this to happen. Downloading software from shady websites is risky. Using tor clients to download files is risky. It can be difficult to be vigilant 100% of the time.

I'll +1 to the advice posted by @ P. Phillips – download and run Malwarebytes scanner. And definitely uninstall CleanMyMac.

I'll also add this bit of light reading for you.
