Look in your Mail>Trash (?)
If they are not in your Trash Can they are gone....
Make changes to your Trash preferences to suit your needs
Mail>Preferences>Account>Mailbox Behavior

It appears one can restore a whole mailbox from available backups. And, as before, it appears one can still navigate to the relevant Library/Mail folder in the backup (using, e.g., Terminal) and try to find the email message. Not fun, but better than nothing.
Do you have a backup, e.g., Time Machine?
Have you looked on the mail server's webmail?

Can no longer retrieve a single email from TM as before.
Just beware that if your mail is IMAP then your provider may delete email in your trash after a certain amount of time(mine is two weeks) regardless what setting you make in preferences.
I agree but very taxing. I have tried this many times and finally went with another app (MailBackupX).
