I bought 16 airtags to put them in all my important bags and accessories.
When adding 15th AirTag to my kit I got a message “Cannot setup this AirTag; Your Apple ID cannot add another airtag until one or more have been removed.”
All information I can find online is that I should be limited to 16 airtags, but I’m stuck on the 15th. All of them are engraved too, so I can’t resell.
Anything can be done about this? Any workaround?

I am also getting this error. I bought a 4 pack of airtags, tried all of them and none of them will work. I have tried all the steps that apple support, youtube, Etc., suggest connecting them but get nowhere. I have taken the batteries out of all of them except one to try and connect but that didn't work either. I have never connected an airtag before and I don't have any currently connected to my apple id.

Yes, only from the device you're trying to use to add your air tags. For me the syncing took less than 30 minutes, just plug in your phone so it doesn't pause.

I’m literally having the same issue with connecting the AirTag
Removing my AirPods didn’t work. Is it possible that Apple Watched or some other device count toward the limit?
I tried everything imaginable but finally got AirTags 15 and 16 connected by unpairing AirPods. Then the AirTags set up perfectly. Of course then remember to repair your AirPods.
It’s a Christmas miracle! This worked. I disconnected my headphones, then paired the Airtag. Finally, I connected my headphones again and it worked! Thank you thank you!
I would delete the watch as well just to rule out all Bluetooth issues.
i wasnt able to add ANY air tags. Once i "forgot the airpods" i was able to install 3 more with no issue
I am having this exact same issue. I have 14 AirTags in use and I can’t get #15 activated. I tried several things that tech support suggested regarding turning off Bluetooth, etc and nothing worked.
Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. It works for me
