Unlocking my iPhone to use with a different carrier

I need to unlock my previously used iPhone on one carrier so we can be used on the other carrier. I contacted the carrier I had in the past and they said it was done but it’s still not happening. Do I contact Apple and if so how and what information do I need?

Unfortunately that information covers Activation Lock, not Carrier Lock.

If you have received information from your cell service provider that they have approved your unlock your next step is to do a backup of your iPhone then connect your iPhone to your computer and restore it as a new device. You will receive a message, "Congratulations you iPhone is unlocked". The restore it again from your backup and you are good to go.

Yes. Contact Apple. You will need a proof of purchase, such as the original receipt or original packaging. Elsewise it may not be able to be unlocked. This locking is a theft deterrent.

Why the Wait:

Phone calls are taking a bit to go through at the moment, due to lots of calls. With the Coronavirus Pandemic, many are at home at the moment, with much time on their hands to contact Apple. So, just stay on the line, and you will get through :)

You are welcome. Thank you too.

Please Clarify: Is the iPhone locked, as in you cannot log in to it? Or are you locked out by the carrier, and need to get the new carrier to unlock it? A carrier wouldn't unlock a device you are locked out of your Apple Account on. Apple must do that.
