Why can't back up my iphone any more on my iMac? iPhone not showing up in iTunes.

When I go to iTunes as I always have to back up my iPhone, why is my iPhone not showing up?

iMac, OS X 10.11

Backing up my iPhone How can I back up my iPhone to an external drive with iTunes? It doesn't appear to have settings when it comes to back up. I changed where my computer saves new info and downloads but it's not working in regards to iTunes which wants to put it on my very limited space laptop!

follow steps here If your computer doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod - Apple Support
