The MacBook case I bought of Amazon is hard shell plastic, and it is a bit snug and won't snap on to the back of my screen unless I apply a little force to the corners. If I push it on, will this put my screen in jeopardy of being damaged? I've had two pressure cracks recently and I do not want to damage my screen in any way, I just want to protect it.
Never in all the decades have I found any advantage of a "hard shell plastic" or any other case
I would not. Full stop.
Buy a quality travel bag for portability & protection.
It is not advise to use a shell... any thing that interferes with passive and or active air flow is not a plus.
Anything that adds to the tight tolerances of your well designed machine is not a plus.

I would Return it to Amazon "hard shell plastic"...
I would advise an AppleCare plan - Apple Support if protection is what you are looking for .
