I sometimes experienced this issue, and it seemed to be related to my LG TV. The only solution I found was to go into the TV Settings on my LG TV, navigate to the Sound settings, and turn on the Test Audio function. The TV played the test music, and then sound worked again with my AppleTV.
Strange…and probably a corner case, but it’s worth a try.
I have had Apple TV for 9 years, working perfectly. About 2 months ago, after a software update, no sound. I have 65” LG TV connected to a Onkyo TN-NR515 surround sound receiver. After trying everything on this forum with no results.
The solution: I upgraded the firmware in the receiver and presto, back working perfectly.
We started having this same issue. Sporadically apps would not play sound when going into them. I have to back out and forth a few times to make it work. I hear the clicks going through all the apps but sometimes when I open a an app to watch a show/movie no sound. We have 4K Apple TV on a Samsung Q7. This is not a setting issue as it works without changing anything after a few tries. Software issue… Any fix from Apple for this?
I’m having this issue on both my Apple TV 4ks, select a show and zero sound. Have to restart the app several times before I get it to play on just a few shows. Definitely a little bug that needs squashing Apple.
I tried unplugging the modem, router and Apple TV but it was no help.
I also did a reset and update on my Apple TV.
Any other suggestions?
Mine does this when I start a show. If I exit the app snd then resume playback, I get the audio.
This behavior just started recently.
I did this on our LG. It played the noise and the Apple TV is still not working. I’ve done all the above.
I was able to resolve the issue. For my setup, a setting in the Sony Receiver must be changed for audio output from receiver to be "only AMP", not "AMP + TV".
Well, as it turns out, the firmware update on the receiver didn't work, still having the no audio issue.
I just recently did the most recent update and now I’m having this same issue. Have tried all of the fixes and still no sound…what are we supposed to do to fix this?
Seems like Apple just isn’t going to do anything about this?
The issue doesn’t have any fix from Apple up to today. The only way I get sound is to connect the hdmi cable directly to the tv, bypassing my expensive surround sound system.
I have the same issue and it is only isolated to my Samsung frame TV

I just had this problem. I went into the Apple TV settings then into Video and Audio and the ran “Check HDMI Connection”. The test takes about 2 minutes but it started working again.
Me too. It’s a problem from the Apple TV modem because 1) restarting doesn’t work 2) It’s not the TV set 3) All plugs + sound works correctly
