Many websites not loading in El Capitan

Dear community,

Many (not all) websites are no longer loading in Safari, Opera, or Chrome under El Capitan (10.11.6 (15G22010)). A website that loads in one of those browsers loads in the others, too, and vice versa, wich seems to indicate system wide problem. Opera and Chrome name the error (NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID) pointing to date and time set incorrectly on the mac, yet time and date on my mac are in fact correct.

Error messages:

Safari:

Safari can’t open the page “https://www.flaschengeister.berlin/cart/overview” because Safari can’t establish a secure connection to the server “www.flaschengeister.berlin”.

Opera:

Your connection is not private

Attackers might be trying to steal your information from www.idealo.de (for example, passwords, messages, or credit cards).

Help me understand

www.idealo.de normally uses encryption to protect your information. When Opera tried to connect to www.idealo.de this time, the website sent back unusual and incorrect credentials. This may happen when an attacker is trying to pretend to be www.idealo.de, or a Wi-Fi sign-in screen has interrupted the connection. Your information is still secure because Opera stopped the connection before any data was exchanged.

You cannot visit www.idealo.de right now because the website uses HSTS. Network errors and attacks are usually temporary, so this page will probably work later.

Any idea?

Thanks so much

On the 30th of September 2021 the certificates that allow you to connect to various websites expired

you can however download new ones.

Click on the link below,

https://letsencrypt.org/certificates/

Download these two files

ISRG Root X1

Self Signed click on the der to download

And ISRG Root X2

Self signed click on der to download.

Open the Keychain Access app in your Applications> Utility folder.

In the left column highlight System.

Click on File in the menubar and click on Import Items,

select the newly downloaded files in turn and press Open.

Double-click on one of the newly imported certificates, click on the disclosure triangle

and next to When using this certificate: change Use System Defaults to Always Trust.

Do the same for the other certificate.

Restart your mac.

Well, I had to go through half-a-dozen steps, including getting a text message with a verification code, just to be able to log into Apple and write this response buuuuutt IT WORKED. I was SO tired of Chrome (and it was only Chrome, when I have Safari, Chrome and FireFox...) giving me that "YOU CAN'T NYAH NYAH NYAH BECAUSE IT'S NOT SAFE!!" message.

I upgraded to 10.11.6 on an older model iMac desktop. Chrome "updated" itself one late night while I slept and the next thing I knew I was banned from half the Internet because of its STUPID "This isn't SAFE!" ...even on some sites when I would try to go ahead and tell it to go to the site it would STILL return to the message "NOPE NOPE NOPE."

Now I can do anything on Chrome without a problem. THANK YOU, EAU ROUGE, SO MUCH!!! 7/12/2022

Thank you for proposing this solution: however it is not working for me & I wonder if you can offer an insight into why or an alternative solution.

I successfully get through all the steps described until importing into Keychain: this results in an error message "An error occurred. Unable to import "ISRG Root X1 (or X2). Error: -25294"

Any thoughts?
