MacBook Air turns on automatically when lid is opened

I read that if you type 'sudo nvram AutoBoot=%00' in Terminal, this stops a MacBook from automatically turning on when the lid is opened but this didn't work for me. Has anyone successfully resolved this issue?

Rather than it turning on when the lid is opened, I would suggest that it has never been turned off/shutdown when you've closed the lid. There is no mechanism for a Mac laptop to power itself up simply by opening the lid.

There are actually several mechanisms for a Mac to start up on its own.

  • For Intel-based Macs without the T2 Security Chip, the System Management Controller (SMC) is responsible for powering the system on automatically.

  • For Intel-based Macs with the T2 Security Chip, the SMC is integrated directly into the T2 Security Chip. It is responsible for powering the system on automatically.

  • For Macs with Apple silicon, the SoC includes an Always On Processor that continues to run even when the rest of the system is shut down. It is responsible for powering the system on automatically.

The most well-known examples of automatic power-on are listed below:

  • Setting a power schedule in System Preferences and requesting Power-on/Wake at a certain day or time.

  • Opening the lid, or pressing the keys or trackpad of Mac notebooks (autoboot). There might be an NVRAM variable to disable this behaviour.
