The Final Word from Apple on managing the " Other " Category

  • Other: Contains files that don’t fall into the categories listed here. This category primarily includes files and data used by the system, such as log files, caches, VM files, and other runtime system resources. Also included are temporary files, fonts, app support files, and plug-ins. You can't manage the contents of this category. The contents are managed by macOS, and the category varies in size depending on the current state of your Mac.

First boot into Safe Mode and check the capacity of the boot drive by Control (right) - clicking on its icon on the Desktop and selecting Get Info from the contextual menu. The Info window will show you the capacity and amount of free space. Then reboot normally and check again.

Regtarding CleanMyMac: there is no reason to ever install or run any 3rd party "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus, VPN or security apps on your Mac.  This user tip describes what you need to know and do in order to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community.

There are no known viruses, i.e. self propagating, for Macs.  There are, however, adware and malware which require the user to install although unwittingly most of the time thru sneaky links, etc.

AntiVirus developers try to group all types as viruses into their ad campaigns of fear.  They do a poor job of the detecting and isolating the adware and malware.  Since there are no viruses these apps use up a lot of system resources searching for what is non-existent and adversely affect system and app performance.

There is one app, Malwarebytes, which was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community, that is desshoigned solely to seek out adware and known malware and remove it.  The free version is more than adequate for most users.

Uninstall CMM according to the developer's instructions.

Have you used Carbon Copy Cloner on the disk to backup any part of your boot drive? A similar problem occurred when CCC was used and it create many local snapshots which were purgeable but filled up the drive.

To see how many local snapshots you have on the boot drive open Terminal and run the following command:

\tmutil listlocalsnapshots /

Let us know how many snapshots are listed. This is how it'll look:

You could try DaisyDisk to get an idea of what's taking up the space. It gives a non-invasive graphic display of the size and location of files on your hard disk and lets you 'drill down' into the top-level chunks:

There are two versions: one on the App Store, one on the developer's website. I'm not absolutely sure, but I believe the latter gives fuller access than the 'sandboxed' App Store version. It's not expensive and it doesn't take up much space.

(I'm not affiliated with DaisyDisk and I don't receive any recompense for this suggestion.)

Cheers,

H

Run the application with Full Disc Access ( Security & Privacy - Full Disc Access ).

It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software.
